Story
On a high limestone plateau overlooking St. Emilion is a superb example of how eye-opening modern Bordeaux can be. When Martin Krajewski purchased this crumbling 200-year-old Château it’s fair to say it was ‘run down’. Now, with the cooperation of some of Bordeaux’s most dynamic young Oenologists (and significant investment) the wines are winning plaudits all over the world.
Part of the secret is in having old vines over a deep limestone base, which results in beautifully concentrated fruit flavours underpinned by elegant mineral complexity. Building on this, the vineyard is developed solely using sustainable products and techniques. The result is obvious in the glass.
Taste
This is a classic Bordeaux blend of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon with the second fermentation in bottle, producing a bright salmon pink colour with vivacious ripe summer berry fruits and crushed raspberries. It has a lovely, delicate mousse and an elegant, refreshing length.
Serve
Lightly chilled at 11°.
Match
The perfect apéritif so match (at the start of the meal) with blinis topped with smoked salmon, crème fraiche and salmon roe/avruga, or (at the end) with fruit desserts. Or perhaps be adventurous and try with a spicy Thai stir-fry?
Avoid
Wine-bores who drone on about ‘Ah yes, but it’s not Champagne, you know’… IT’S 2010, OLD CHAP! The antidote to this is a second bottle. Just to prove a point.
