Story
Austria is making some of the finest dry whites in the world and Johann is a man on a mission; carving out a formidable reputation. His tiny Spitz vineyard sits at the base of two mountains and has gathered layers of sediment over the centuries. The vines are now 40 years old with deep roots which drive the wet-slate mineral quality of this wine.
Grüner Veltliner is one of the world's most food-friendly wines, and is generally intended for drinking young in the Austrian Heuriger bars. But it’s certainly capable of ageing and in competition it has done exceptionally well.
Taste
Johann's Grüner is a wine with delicate aromas but delivers ripe apples, stone-fruit and white-pepper spice, finishing with racy lemon acidity.
Serve
Lightly chilled at 10-11°.
Match
This wine is loved by sommeliers for its adaptability, so serve as the apéritif with party snacks and salty nibbles, most white meats with velvety veloutées (What? You've never read Escoffier?) or roasted fish where the Grüner's crisp acidity is ideal to cut creamy, buttery sauces.
Avoid
Wearing that party hat on the way home. Or indeed, unless you are actually Austrian, any form of Austrian national dress.
Quote
So much to see, I could put on mask & snorkel and dive in this wine!
