Story
When would you call up your cousin to travel into the African bush and buy a derelict winery with concrete tanks and crumbling equipment that was last used in the 1930's?
Well, if your grandfather spent 46 years as winery manager at Groot Constantia, and both your fathers grew grapes all their lives, it might count for something. If you were previously the winemaker at award-winning Rustenberg you might be growing a little more confident. But if you knew the now-matured 50-year-old bush vines had their roots deep into three types of granite and serious shale, you'd be starting to bubble with excitement.
Taste
Adi and Hein Badenhorst’s Secateurs Red, a southern-Rhône(ish)-style blend of Shiraz, Cabernet, Grenache and Carignan is a soft, somewhat indulgent wine. Our sommeliers thought that the red fruit tasted of ripe cherries and plums with the wine freshened by green peppers and hints of smoky dark sugar. This is the new face of South Africa as tasted by (converted) sceptics!
Serve
Cool at 16°.
Match
Think bold indulgent, spicy tastes. Sprinkle chicken pieces with smoked paprika and sauté with chorizo, then casserole with fresh tomatoes, white beans and herbs.
Avoid
Heading off into the African bush. It’ll be romantic up until the point when you run out of ice and you start wishing you had paid more attention to Ray Mears.
Quote
One of the most obvious of the new generation of South African wine geniuses.
