Story
Now, who’s ever heard of this one – the Lagrein grape, a cousin to both Syrah & Pinot Noir? Grown in north east Italy (Veneto) this wine is a great find. Growing and vinifying Lagrein isn’t for the faint hearted; getting it wrong results in aggressive tannins and sour astringency on the finish. Much like trying to order a coffee in St Marks Square in nearby Venice. But ‘European Producer of the Year’ Cavit Cooperative has clearly understood what makes Trentino special, and we’re properly grateful for that.
Taste
Our sommeliers not only liked the dark (dunkel) forest fruits, savoury tobacco and spice but also the great acidity which makes it such a food-friendly wine. In addition to being chosen in our blind-tasting by sommeliers, this wine also made the national Sommelier Awards gold list.
Serve
Cool at 16°.
Match
Rich, meaty pasta dishes, rustic casseroles and earthy mushroom dishes – think easy comfort food to match a comforting wine.
Avoid
Taking a relaxing gondola ride and opting for the additional accordion and O Sole Mio operatic accompaniment. Oh boy, 90 minutes can be a long time.
