Story
Funny thing, those Damascene conversions. One day you’re Jean-Pierre the farmer, then suddenly, Lo! ; a chorus of heavenly angels, a shaft of light and you realize you’re actually Jean-Pierre the winemaker. It’s fortunate for us that JP saw the light, reputedly after tasting an iconic Corbières in 1998.
The Seguela family began vinifying in 1999, and we can’t help wondering why they waited this long, given their fantastic attention to detail. The ingredients are first rate: vines between 25 and 90 years old, cultivated near bio-dynamically on schist/gneiss soils that encourage deep roots and low yields, all surrounded by wild herbal garrigue.
Taste
Jean-Julien 2001 (named after JP’s son) is a pure, aromatic wine, backed up with the sort of velvety richness only achievable with old, low-yielding vines. There’s an astonishing degree of vibrancy and balance, offering a glimpse of the incredible potential of Roussillon. We’re happy we found this.
Serve
Lightly cool at 15°.
Match
Roast lamb, Provencal vegetable tian, duck (confit or even Peking with plum Hoisin), pommes salardaises, Spanish chicken and chorizo stew, aged beef sirloin with choron sauce.
Avoid
Zealously seeking a Revelation in the third bottle. Moderation is the key; you don’t want to end up feeling a bit Ezekiel.
Quote
Richness and subtlety in abundance; the perfect Mayfair wine!
