Story
Let’s go south. Keep going…. further… a bit more. Stop! You’ve now arrived at the 45th parallel, and the most southerly vineyards on Earth. Far from the ocean and its moderating effect on climate, daytime temperatures soar to mid thirties, whilst nights are in single figures – just what you need for fruit ripeness and intense flavours.
Te Mara (Maori for ‘The Garden’) was set up by husband & wife team Janiene & David, who saw the immediate potential in this rocky alluvial plain close to Mt Pisa. Using sustainable processes and with the considerable vision of award-winning winemakers Sarah-Kate & Dan Dineen from Auzzie’s Hunter Valley, they are crafting beautiful wines.
Taste
Their Pinot Gris is hand-harvested and split fermented; 50% whole bunch and the rest de-stemmed and pressed. Using aromatic yeasts, the wines are a superb balance of intoxicatingly exotic fruit, syrup of pears, citrus and rose petal with fresh mineral acidity. The lovely richness in the mouth shows what a sparkling future Pinot Gris has here.
Serve
Chilled at 11°.
Match
Apart from being the perfect summer apéritif, this wine solves all those tricky pan-Asian problems! Spicy Szechuan pepper and chilli dishes, black bean sauces, Thai stir-frys, even a culinary trek into India. Go East!
Avoid
Hairdressers in Central Otago; have you ever seen the ‘hairstyles’ of the formidable Otago Highlanders scrum forwards? No, best not point it out to them.
Quote
Traveller, Stop here. You are now standing between the South Pole and the equator. What does it feel like to be standing at forty-five degrees?
