Story
L’autoroute, le péage… the M25. Do you see where this is going? Road trips to the south of France are in a different league. Roll off the ferry in Calais, enjoy lunch in Champagne, dinner in Burgundy. The next day, linger over lunch in any number of Michelin Macaron (star) awarded restaurants near Lyons and, towards the end of the day, as you pass Châteauneuf-du-Pape on the Avignon road, branch off left and enter the Côtes du Rhône.
Two words sum up the wines – eminently drinkable. You’ll find reds dominated by Grenache Noir and Syrah (although some 20 other varieties could find their way into the mix), so colours range from deep ruby to purple and wines are generally always deliciously full-bodied.
Taste
Emmanuel Reynaud is the fourth generation of winemakers in a dynasty going back to his great grandfather Albert in 1880. His wines are based on old-vine Grenache, balanced with Syrah and Cinsault, giving little colour but beguiling violet-cedar aromas, backed up by straw and gooseberries. A rich welcome of sweet cherry and blackberry, spicy caramel and tobacco with a fine persistent finish. Eminently drinkable indeed.
Serve
Slightly cool at 16°.
Match
Magret de Canard with potato Dauphinoise, earthy mushroom sauce, young venison with Madeira reduction, truffle mash & curly kale, pommes fondant … even hard cheeses like Tomme de Savoie, or blues.
Avoid
Dining in service stations; even in France the Autogrill is more Michelin tires than Michelin Macarons.

Syrah, Grenache, Cinsault, Mouvèdre … it’s all Rock and Rhône to me.
